| For the
last year, I have had the honor of studying Kung
Fu with the Cheng Ming School of Martial Arts in
Taichung, Taiwan, which was established by Grandmaster
Wang Shu Chin, and is now presided over by his successor,
Master Wang Fu Lai. Prior to this, I had studied
martial arts for 16 years in the UK. In search of
something with more depth to it, I came to Taiwan
where I had heard that several top masters of internal
Kung Fu had come to escape the Cultural Revolution
on the mainland and preserve their arts. After a
little searching, I found Cheng Ming and began studying
the three internal styles of Tai Chi Chuan, Xing
Yi Chuan and Ba Gua Zhang intensively under Dr.
Liang, one of the system’s foremost teachers. I
knew right from the start that there was something
profoundly different about what I was being taught,
something that set it in a different class from
the other martial arts that I had studied. |

| The three
styles compliment each other, relying as they do
on the same principles of body structure, use and
movement, while applying them in very different
ways. The Tai Chi Chuan system taught by Cheng Ming
was devised in 1929 by the Tai Chi Organizing Committee
of the National Martial Arts Academy in Nanking,
China, in an effort to bring together all the major
styles of Tai Chi taught at that time, and re-invest
them with their original martial spirit. Grandmaster
Wang Shu Chin was instrumental in seeing that elements
of Xing Yi Chuan and Ba Gua Zhang were also included
in the new system. Xing Yi Chuan is one of the oldest
Kung Fu systems and its origins are lost to history.
It is based on linear footwork and powerful strikes
generated from the ground up through the whole body.
Ba Gua Zhang is a system based entirely on circular
patterns of footwork and uses predominately open-handed
strikes, both with the tips of the fingers and the
palms. The origins of Ba Gua Zhang are also uncertain,
although many trace its unique exercise of “walking
the circle” back to ancient Taoist meditative practices. |

| The beauty
and subtlety of the forms used to train a practitioner
in these arts far surpasses anything else I have
ever seen. Also, the internal power that it is possible
to develop through continued and dedicated training
is legendary, and has been displayed by the great
masters in almost superhuman feats. Grandmaster
Wang Shu Chin, the founder of Cheng Ming, was famed
for taking powerful blows to the body from all challengers,
including boxing legend Jack Dempsey, without any
ill effects. Other stories about him and the masters
he studied with are awe-inspiring. As well as being
an extremely advanced system of self-defense, the
benefits in terms of health, fitness and mental
development which can be derived from studying Cheng
Ming Kung Fu are enormous. The practice of Zhang
Zhuan (Standing form), and static stance training
in Xing Yi Chuan develop a balanced, strong, grounded
and flexible body structure, and the practice of
the Tai Chi Chuan form develops focused and fluid
movements of both the body and mind, and can produce
a supreme state of relaxation and mental focus when
practiced persistently. Ba Gua Zhang brings all
this together with quick, circular footwork and
dynamic body movement of a kind I have never before
seen in the martial arts. |

| Many people
have reported overcoming a huge variety of medical
problems through training in the internal martial
arts including back pain, hypertension and rheumatism.
Personally, training with Cheng Ming helped me quickly
overcome a damaged ligament in my lower back which
has given me no trouble since. As the exercises
on which these arts are based stimulate a free and
balanced flow of energy through the nervous system,
the muscular structure and the internal organs,
continued practice can build a level of health and
fitness few people would otherwise ever be fortunate
enough to enjoy. Furthermore, as the arts depend
on developing the subtle flow of energy from within
rather than building hard and bulky muscles to do
the work, they are suitable for anyone, young or
old, man or woman, and can be practiced for a lifetime. |

| I have made
the decision to remain in Taiwan for at least another
year so I can continue to study these deeply fascinating
arts. I came to the East in the hope of finding
the authentic martial arts and what I have discovered
has far exceeded my expectations, and saying that,
I know I’ve barely scratched the surface of what
the Cheng Ming system holds in store for me. |
